The hearts of men and women have been influenced by modernity. Technology, business, entertainment, materialism and leisure have captivated the hearts of men and women.

Now is the time for God to purify our hearts.

The Heart is desperately wicked and needs God.

The God we serve is the only one who has the capacity and capability to change the heart.

David, the Psalmist, reminds us of his own personal cry to God: “Create in me a clean heart oh God, and renew a right spirit” (Psalm 51:10). The word heart and spirit are interchangeable. This cry from the heart has its commencement in God’s call to repentance. Obedience is to respond and ask God for His forgiveness and have faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Every time we reject the call of God the heart gets harder.

Spiritual purity that God demands penetrates far beyond the mere outward renovation, and reformation. God looks at the whole inner being, including the understanding, our worldview, our affections and our will. It is only God who has the capacity to give us a new heart. The prophet Ezekiel states this process perfectly, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).

God’s work of grace in the heart commences by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

Paul confirms this in Titus 3:5. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit”.

This cleansing is the cleansing of the affections, the will. My will is now directed towards God and not directed towards self.

It is God who purifies the heart. The new function of the heart is to glorify God.

Now is the opportunity to thank God for giving us a pure heart.
